Derech

The meaning of DERECH is a path, or a road, and specifically "the place we are stepping into", a central concept in many Eastern philosophies and martial arts, and notably, the Dao/Tao concept. With "Do" in Japanese meaning "way", "Karate Derech" resonates the concept of Karate-do, the way of Karate, and combines Karate and Krav Maga. Importantly, it prioritizes the morals and ethics of the Budo spirit. This approach resonates with the integration approach of Shito-ryu Karate and combines open and respectful investigation of knowledge from different sources while keeping traditional ethical values as its core. With that, Karate Derech offers a path to self-discovery by integrating traditional and modern martial arts and a scientific approach to the learning process.

The teaching approach and methodologies are closely related to the Mind-Set Framework models that integrate neuroscience and martial arts to promote physical and mental well-being. You can find more information here.

In practice, the trainings are primarily based on the Shito-ryu karate curriculum, including basic and advanced kihon, kumite (sparring), and in-depth analysis of Shito-ryu kata, as well as practical applications that incorporate Krav Maga techniques and methodologies. In addition, Tai chi, grappling, and mindfulness-based exercises are often a part of the training. The trainings focus on proper biomechanics and awareness of movement dynamics and mindset, and their use for physical and mental resilience. The trainings focus on self-defense aspects of karate and not on competitive Karate.

The symbol of Derech combines four elements: the traditional Shito-ryu crest, the Shito-Ryu kanji that stands for the original style, the Krav Maga symbol, and a path in its center, to signify the endless process of self-improvement.
